"Opinion on Kapituj Jete"

This book felt very different from what I usually read, especially since it’s been a while since I last read something in Albanian. It brought back a lot of that feeling I used to have as a kid reading in my own language. The writing is very romantic in that typical Albanian way, and a lot of the stories feel real, like you’re listening to someone’s life rather than reading fiction. What stood out the most to me were the cultural elements — family, honor, and tradition — which made some parts hit much harder.

Story ratings:

  • Shënime për Meqën – ★★⯪☆☆ A slow start and a bit all over the place, but the ending made it more interesting.
  • Unë dhe Eminja me emrin Hellgë – ★★★★⯪ Very relatable, especially with identity and trying to force traditions onto others.
  • Kapituj Jete – ★★★★☆ A strong and emotional story about family and sacrifice, with a very heavy ending.
  • Ai mendonte rreth të vetave – ★★☆☆☆ Honestly very forgettable compared to the others.
  • Shelgjishtja është dëshmitare – ★★★★⯪ A powerful story about Kanun and forgiveness, with a really unexpected ending.
  • Një natë e heshtur – ★★★★⯪ Great tension and emotion, especially considering the time it was written.
  • Ti, Erë, që fryn nga jugu – ★★★★⯪ A very real look at migration and leaving everything behind.
  • Ti, Jetë, Ti, Dhimbje e Gjatë – ★★★★★ The strongest story in the book, very emotional and hard to read.

The final rating of 4/5 comes from averaging all the individual story ratings, which I think is the fairest way to judge a book like this since the quality varies a lot between stories.

One of the main issues I had with the book is that at times it feels like it loses focus and goes too deep into unnecessary details. There are moments where it feels like the author is trying to turn everything into philosophy, even things that don’t really need it. Some parts drag more than they should, and not every story leaves a strong impression. But when the book is good, it’s really good — and those moments are what carry the overall experience.
